Format and criteria

Each show was a combination of featured band, featured poet, open mic session, together with a marketplace for food and creative products.

To be a featured band or poet meant having a product, be it a book of poetry or a CD or MP3 download. Featured artists were paid. Free mic performers were not. The free mic portion was an open stage for anybody who wished to share their thoughts. It was used mainly by hip hop MCs

The shows were free. They took place on Church Square once a month, in the Cape Town CBD, and in a suburb of the Cape Flats once a month. Both shows featured the same acts. The Church Square shows started as evening events and became lunch events. Cape Flats events were Saturday afternoon sessions.

Cape Town foods were available at the events. Tables and chairs were provided by the production, and audience could enjoy the meals sitting at a table watching a show.

Each show was filmed and recorded. Performance, recording and image release contracts were signed with featured artists. All intellectual copyright is retained by the performers and composers, while Goemarati has full promotional rights, and first right of release should all parties agree the material is commercially releasable.

It was impossible to do this with the open mic performers. They each receive a copy of the video, recordings and images made on the day. The same rights apply. Not all open mic performers have received their recordings yet.
