Goemarati
is one of several layers of music and cultural strategic intervention
in the Western Cape. Essentially it is a marketing strategy for
Cape Town music, designed to facilitate growth opportunity for the
musicians and creative products of the region.
It is a middle layer strategy. The layers could look like this:
Layer 1. Platforms for unrecorded musicians.
Concert series for the emerging music makers who are gigging, but as
yet unrecorded. Acts as an audit of the unrecorded music layer of the
city. Should open up infrastructure for them in terms of income
opportunity and becoming part of broader provincial music
infrastructure that would include recording and marketing
opportunities. Should elevate them to the layer of Goemarati.
Example is Oppiestoep, live at the Village Hotel at Spier. It is no
longer running, but it provided opportunity for 72 shows over 8 months,
featuring the widest cross-section of emerging Cape Town music.
It was an excellent means of auditing the unrecorded music scene,
and assessing its level of professionality.
Layer 2. Platform for recorded artists Goemarati
Artists who already have products are placed into a live performance
and product marketing infrastructure designed to create the next level
of elevation for Cape Town musicians, and creating better access to
markets for the sale of their products.
Layer 3. Other regional and international opportunities
From Goemarati, artists should be able to more easily access national and then international stages
Goemarati fits together with the newly formed Cape Music Industry
Commission, and its objectives of facilitating the growth and
development of the music industry of the Western Cape. It can become a
central marketing and live performance strategy for the commission. |
