Les Javan must rate as one of Cape Town's greatest guitar
players. It's not just a technical proficiency - Javan's composing
skills are grand, in the tradition of the guitar and singing greats of
Brazil, like Joao Gilberto and Baden Powell. His music speaks of a
great distance and depth, sketching the history of culture from his
compositional pen.
Javan, like Mac, is a maverick with a million stories, and as many
songs. One
of Leslie's favorite stories is that of tracing the heritage of
his family, the Javanites. He can trace them back to Javan, the grandson of the
prophet Noah. They lived at a time of a great empire building.
Some members of the family became part of the ruling parties and
others left in fear of persecution and being oppressed. The
area the Javanites settled in was called "Javan", or the
"kingdom of Javan". Wars over the years saw them losing their land and in time it became known as Greece. The
families who lived in "Urfa" near the border between
Turkey and Iraq left this place at the time of the first
Christian
crusade and moved to Egypt and the East. Family members can today
be found in Iran, Egypt and in some other small patches.
Les is a member of the Khoi Khollektif as
part music director,
songwriter and composer-arranger, apart from playing guitar and
sometimes percussion.
