02 APRIL. Hilton Schilder, solo piano
Hilton was joined for three songs by his daughter, Dwinde
Who is Hilton?
Cape
Town's list of fine piano players includes the youngest of the lot,
Mark Fransman, the oldest of the lot, Abdullah Ibrahim, and, somewhere
inbetween at heading toward 50, although you'd never say, is Hilton
Schilder. Hilton comes from the Schilder and Africa dynasty of
musicians, the biggest family of musicians in the world.
Which would account for nothing if there wasn't exceptional skill.
Watching Hilton perform is like watching a six year old at play. Free
and full of imagination.
HIlton is best known for his work with Mac McKenzie as part of the punk
band the Genuines, in the 80s, and more recently, and currently, as
part of the Goema Captains of Cape Town.

What did we want to achieve?
Hilton
doesn't often get to play solo, performing his own material. His
recording deal with Mountain Records recently came to an end, so this
was an opportunity to get a sense of Hilton's compositions, new and
old. Most of what we recorded this night has never been recorded
before.
