Ivan is another of the hot young guns from Maputo, been here for years now. Came through the Old Mutual Jazz Encounters programme, just like Judith Sephuma and Selaelo Selota, Melanie Scholtz and so many others. When I heard him for the first time, at the Encounters, he was performing his composition called Rain before Play. People were spellbound.

He has since become a busy busy musician.

Ivan played the previous Oppiestoep series as a duo with Dino Miranda. For this Oppiestoep outing he brought on his trio. Clever all the way. He's a terrific player and composer.
