SONG FROM THE SESSION
Vrou van Samaria (.wma)
No track available from the session, but listen to this one for a sense of the two.
Brydon
had the minidisk to run the recording onto the computer. His home was
broken into and all his gear, including that disk, was stolen.

Derek Gripper and Brydon Bolton
(guitar and acoustic bass)
22 December 2006
For
the previous Oppiestoep series, Derek had collaborated with Alex van
Heerden (he appeared solo later in the Oppiestoep 2 series). Alex
and Derek had previously collaborated as part of the Wondergigs
session, produced by afribeat.com, on a new piece called Sagtevlei,
which was eventually released as an album by Open Record. It is
something of a gem of Cape Town music that not many people will have
heard.
This time it was Derek and Brydon. Brydon. Brydon played on that
beautiful Wondergigs session as part of the string quartet. The duo
performed Derek's pieces.
Derek's material is beautiful. And strange in that under the right
circumstances it is visionary, ala the Oppiestoep I performance with
Alex. And under the wrong circumstances it sounds lazy.
Somehow, this gig, the opening of Oppiestoep II, just wasn't the right
circumstances. The gents arrived dressed a little sloppily and
performed under the radar.
Later in February, they returned to Spier to perform outside of the
main ampitheatre as part of the Spier Poetry Festival. They were
magical, and the festival producer, Annebelle Schreuders, send
countless smses about how she wanted them back the next night. Such is
the nature of music performance.
