Who is Zami?
Zami is a rising Cape Town star. She is currently
recording an album with Gabi le Roux, who is best known for making
Mandoza a star with the song Nkalakatha a couple years back.
Zami is Tina Turner glam nails and legs with a bluesy afro bent. At
least that's how she can be. She can also be straight up radio friendly
pop ala Mariah Carey.
She's wildly talented is Zami, young and with places to go. She's had
years of performing in productions such as Diamonds and the Dust and so
she also brings that musical production feel to her performances, which
can be a letdown. All schmaltz and kitsch. Like most of South Africa's
young talent, Zami has had few mentors to guide her in the process of
bringing out her own voice. The money is in playing other people's
music.

What did we want to achieve?
We
were looking for a show of all original Zami songs. The underlying
philosophy for the series was to give the space over to the musicians
to express themselves. It is rare for musicians to get a gig where they
can play whatever is in their heads, and not somebody elses
prerogative. It was telling to see who took advantage of that and who
didn't.
Zami performed four of her own songs out of 90 minutes worth of
music. Of those four, one song is magic. Listen to it by following the
link on the left hand side.
Zami is an electrifying performer. This was Andrew Brown's favourite
performance, and a number of guests that night asked if she had a CD
out.
