The idea of the Sunday Spends, in the words of creator and patron Joe Mthimka, is to pay tribute to that period in the 1960s when musicians and audience members would break all sorts of apartheid laws to literally `spend' time together. Back then, musicians of all colours and persuasions would gather at Ikwezi to share music and story, no matter the restrictions.

And in the words of Abdullah Ibrahim, "while the apartheid government declared a state of emergency, we had better things to do." Like the wachtungs in Senegal and the gathering of the exiles in the USA and Europe, the Spends were a form of protest, as well as a means of forging musical progression.

The Sunday Spends in their current shape builds on this ethos by creating a space where business and expression can come together toward urban regeneration, where people come together towards social regeneration.
