Maveric is
a combination of Mavo and Eric - Maverick, the names of the two men
behind the group. It's a little juvenile in origin, but right on the
money in meaning. Maverick is `maverick' in the true spirit of that word
- outside of the parameters, doing things on their own terms, not
governed by or concerned with the preconceptions of others. Free agents.
This is fresh, intelligent pop music in isiXhosa.
Mavo writes and speak sings the lyrics, Eric writes and arranges the
music and plays the guitar. They met for the first time in 1990 at a
music college in Athlone called MAPP (the college was instrumental in
creating music movements on the Cape Flats). Eric moved to the
University of Cape Town after graduating at Mapp in 1991. In 1992 Mavo
went to train and graduate at teachers college.
Mavo's vocal rhythm is partly due to playing bass for various reggae
bands. He recorded with Vuyani Qali and their CD was nominated for a
SAMA award. Eric has recorded for a compilation CD called "Journey
Through The Townships", produced by New World Music. Eric is
currently heading up the Amy Biehl Foundation's music project, working
primarily as a music teacher.
Maveric is currently recording an album at
Funhouse Studios. A four track EP is scheduled for release in November.
